Meet The Modeller

My venture into the realms of model making began one bright, spring cleaning morning when it, almost literally, hit me to take up this wonderful, inspiring hobby. Whilst clearing out a wall mounted cupboard - full of cupboard type clutter that we all keep for no apparent reason - 2 boxes slid forward which I had to swiftly catch to prevent them hitting me and taking my eye out... Possibly.

It was these 2 boxes that held the shape of things to come... Vinyl model kits of animé figures bought 3 years previous by my youngest son, and had now lain untouched in the cupboard of eternal clutter. The fascination, excitement and sheer intrigue struck like a bolt from the blue, with more intensity than would be needed to spark life into an entire army of Frankenstein’s monsters! I knew then I had to open the boxes and at least cut out those pieces of plastic to see how it was possible to turn them into something as awesome as the pictures on the boxes...

These first two attempts resulted in the making of Skuld and Dunan Nut. See my Build Blogs to read about their terrible fate, and the many mishaps encountered before lessons were learnt by their eager, yet naive creator

Over time, and with plenty of paint, pins, putty and patience, I have progressed to a stage where I have a much better understanding of this absorbing hobby, and yet am well aware there is a wealth of knowledge that I have not yet tapped into but endeavour to do so - This is one hobby where you never stop learning, and certainly for me, my enthusiasm to learn never wanes.

I hand paint my models with paintbrushes and paint, having not yet ventured into the art of spraying, as for me the most pleasure is derived from using the brush and hand painting ridiculously tiny pieces, bit by bit - Almost sadistic pleasure, perhaps, or as I prefer, therapeutic – Whatever it is, I enjoy it immensely!

At first my only medium was acrylic paints, but I now incorporate enamels and chalk pastels, and find all equally as good to work with. I also believe that I’m one of the few females to keep a bottle of nail polish remover for purposes other than removing nail polish!

If I had the opportunity to do this for a living I’d not only be extremely poor - but obliviously happy as I find it irksome when I’m without a model kit and just can’t wait for the next one to arrive. On my list of ‘models I want to make’ are Kirk and Spock figures (and in time, other crew members), characters from Lord of the Rings, Belldandy and Urd on a Mustang (from Ah! My Goddess), and at least one figure from the Solarwind collection. Figures I most enjoy making are fantasy figures (quite wide ranging, from mythical to fantasy film characters, and beyond), manga, anime, and any figure that appeals to me.

Hidden somewhere, or even quite prominent, on my models is my 'signature' - a ladybird!

Check out my photo gallery to view all my models built so far... I'll be adding more as soon as new models are completed. I'd like to thank my hubby and my youngest son for their brilliant photography work :-) And I'd like to thank my little Westie dog, Malo, for just being there!

Other stuff:

Married, with 3 growed up sons.
If I'm not 'modelling', I'm comping (entering competitions via the UK's number one competitions portal; Loquax). If I'm not 'modelling' or comping, I'm baking (this is quite a rare occurence!) or trying to make something ingenious out of bits of string and other rubbish, or DIY'ing, or just sitting and thinking, or just sitting. If I'm not doing any of these these things, I'm asleep.
Things I Like: Everything, apart from the things I don't like
